What is a software repository?

A software repository is a storage location that is used by Linux to find and install applications. When you install an application in Linux, it is copied from the software repository and installed on your computer.

Usually the software repository is an online repository. This DVD set gives you a local copy of the repository -- which means you can install applications from the repository without waiting for your computer to download the software from the online repository.

How does this DVD repository work?

This DVD repository sets itself as the primary software repository. Your computer will check this repository before trying an online repository. If an application is not found in the local repository, it will check the online repository. This means you will always be able to install the most recent applications.

Do I have to use any special software to install applications from this repository?

No. This DVD repository is designed to seamlessly integrate with your distribution. You can install applications from it using any package manager for your distribution. Once it has been setup, you'll only know it's there because downloads that would have taken hours from the online repository, will complete instantly.

Is this DVD repository easy to setup?

Yes! A program to setup the repository is included on DVD #1. It handles all of the details so you won't have to.

This DVD repository includes updates. What if my system is already up to date?

This DVD repository includes updates in the repository. When your system is updated, it will copy the update from the local repository instead of the online repository. If the update is already installed, your system will skip it; and if a recent update is not included in the local repository, it will be copied from the online repository.
