Pinguy OS an out-of-the-box working operating system for everyone, not just geeks.
This OS is for people that have never used Linux before or for people that just want an out-of-the-box working OS without doing all the tweaks and enhancements that everyone seems to do when installing a fresh copy of Ubuntu or other Linux based Distro's.
About Pinguy OS
PinguyOS is a small but very popular distribution. You can often find us listed very highly on the Distrowatch ‘league tables’. PinguyOS is somewhat of a niche in the Linux world as we focus on ‘normal users’, not geeks.
The whole point of PinguyOS is to be as simple and straight forward to use as possible. After all, most users don’t want to spend hours tweaking and configuring a machine just to get it to work, most people want it to ‘just work’ – that’s where PinguyOS comes in.
PinguyOS is the brainchild of one man, Antoni Norman and he is still the lead developer on the project. Here is what Antoni has to say about the origins of PinguyOS:
I started out by listening to what my friends and family wanted to use their PC for. I then found the most user friendly programs for the task required. After a while I got a good idea of what most people use their PC for and what programs were the easiest to use. Like using Shotwell for easily uploading images to Facebook, gtkpod for putting music, photos and video on a ipod/iphone and Arista for converting the video to an iPod friendly format.
As time went on my version of Linux gained popularity amongst my friends and family, with regular positive feedback coming from everyone. So I decided to take the plunge and release it as an official Linux distribution – from then on, PinguyOS was born.
Apart from being easy to use, PinguyOS also looks great. Linux has matured hugely over the last few years and most applications have an extremely polished look to them (long gone are the days of Linux distributions that look like Windows 95). Many of these applications are added to PinguyOS by default in order to give it that extra ‘bling’. For example, Docky gives users quick and easy access to their most commonly used applications and folders by way of a desktop launcher. Gnome Shell gives users the ability to quickly and easily search for anything on their computer in just one mouse click and Gloobus Preview allows users to see thumbnails of their images and music cover art before they are opened.
With all these extra applications installed you may think that PinguyOS is slow to run and needs a powerhouse computer to run smoothly. Nothing could be further from the truth. Antoni has also added many system tweaks in order to make PinguyOS run flawlessly – even on low powered machines. All of this means that the recommended system requirements of PinguyOS are exactly the same as Ubuntu – impressive I think you will agree!
All of the above means that PinguyOS is the choice for anyone thinking about wetting their feet in the Linux pond. Simply burn a CD, run it live to test and then install. That’s it, no extra CODEC’s, applications or tweaks will be needed to get you up and running. If you need help though, you can always visit our forums or come and say hi on IRC chat.
We are very proud of PinguyOS and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we do!
