What do you get when you combine LXDE, Xfce, Compiz & Emerald ?
I am proud to announce the new installment of MakuluLinux, The worlds first ever of its kind, The new Hybrid LxFce Desktop. This release combines the back-end of Lxde to provide raw speed with the front end of Xfce, flavored with Makulu style to provide pure beauty. This is a beast, simple and elegant yet powerful, customizable, beautiful and rock solid stable. Make sure to read the release notes below for full information on this edition:
Hybrid Desktop :
MakuluLinux LxFce combines both LXDE and Xfce to bring a “best of both worlds” desktop environment to the end user, making use of the LXDE backend allows the system to run smooth and snappy no matter how much ram is being used. Xfce frontend brings more user friendly front end applications to manage your system. The combination has been designed to compliment each environment offering stretnghs on both sides and none of the weaknesses.
Mobile Device Connection :
LxFce now supports MTP connections, you can simply plug in your mobile phone and drag and drop files between desktop and cellphone easily…
Volume Management :
Lxfce now supports open on insert options. If you insert Audio CD, Video CD/DvD, Camera, Empty disc, it will open the oppropiate program. for example plugging in a new printer will open printer config manager, plugging in a new keyboard will open keyboard config manager, inserting blank cd/dvd will open Xfburn and so forth.
LxFce makes use of the Lxde Theme manager ( custom look and feel ) You can easily preview your theme before applying it system wide. You also have the option to edit the color scheme of the theme without effective the global parameters of the theme.
Emerald Theme Manager :
The default GTK window borders cannot match emerald in pure beauty and customizability, therefore Emerald is used and controls the window borders in MakuluLinux LxFce.
Compiz is the default window manager in MakuluLinux LxFce, however, most of the flashy stuff is all turned off, the only options that are enabled is window decorations, Cube and Opacity. These are enabled to compliment and blend the existing themes and give the system a much more polished look. If users want to enable all the flashy stuff they can easily do so via the compiz settings manager.
By default transparency has been enabled for many aspects of the global themes in MakuluLinux LxFce, bottom panel, menu’s, popups all have some transparency enabled. However, I have made sure that text is nice and visible throughout the desktop and easy to see clearly.
Workspaces are controlled via the Compiz settings manager, by default 4 workspaces are enabled, you can increase/decrease these in the “general options / Desktop” section of Compiz settings manager.
Settings Center :
By default LXDE does not have a control panel or settings center, all the settings icons are thrown all over the launcher menu, this makes it hard to tweak the system if you have to hunt for the settings you are looking for. Therefore I have to design a new settings center for MakuluLinux LxFce, it is simple, yet powerful and allows the user to fully take advantage of tweaking his system easily with all the icons in one screen.
Steam and PlayonLinux are both included on this Edition, users can simply fire up steam and start playing their favorite games or use PlayonLinux and setup their favorite titles with ease. a Few extra games have been included as well.
MakuluLinux LxFce includes the Full WPS office suite ( formerly known as Kingsoft office ), start working on your documents straight out of the box, it is also fully compatible with Microsoft office file types. Included as well is Document PDF reader. Using Linux in the office environment has never been easier …
Wine is included in MakuluLinux LxFce, Running all your windows software is as simple as it is in the windows environment. simply double click an Exe or Msi file and watch it come to life, run your favorite Windows software or games the same way you would in a Windows environment
Variety Wallpaper changer :
Variety offers not just a simple wallpaper changer, but also adds a beautiful clock and daily quotes on your desktop, adding to the natural beauty of of the system. Variety offers complete control over your desktop wallpapers, you can use the included wallpapers as is or even set it to download new ones at scheduled times. You can even set special effects on selected wallpapers, or even random effects on random wallpapers, the power is literally in your hands. But please be warned, while variety is active, your normal desktop wallpaper manager will not be effective in selecting wallpapers, if you want to manage wallpapers the old fashioned way you will have to disable variety.
Dual Menu’s :
Like every other Edition and as has become the standard, Makulu LxFce offers dual menu’s. Whisker on the left for guys that want to browse the traditional style menu and Synapse on the right for a instant quick-launch or quick file/folder search, the combination works great.
It was a hard choice to choose between Firefox and Chrome, both are capable browsers pretty much on par with each other, the decider for me was space. I needed to keep this ISO small and firefox install around 100mb less than chrome does. The add-ons and customizations i normally do on chrome are all available for firefox, so i had no trouble doing my usual configurations … Firefox is configured with speed dial to easily bookmark and access favorites, some useful plug-ins are pre-configured, namely : adblock, youtube downloader, facebook notifications, Gmail notifications and Twitter notifications …
Makulu Constructor :
Makulu LxFce offers a Built in constructor tool, this tool lets you quickly and easily create a 100% snapshot of your LIVE system as it is, save it into a ISO that can be then re-installed on a new computer. It comes complete with a livemode, installer and full EFI/Secure boot. In fact, this release was compiled with the same constructor tool, which is evidence of how powerful it is. Make any changes to your dekstop, doesn’t matter how big or small, then hit the construct button and let the constructor go to work. when its done out pops a bootable EFI ready ISO. its all automated with almost no interaction required from the user. This ISO can be put onto a DVD or usb and installed on any other computer. You can now customize your system to your hearts desire and them make a Complete install-able backup to either store somewhere safely, or to install on a chain of computers, It has never ever been this easy to compile linux before, with just one click of a button !
Makulu LxFce edition sports a whole new Range of never before seen beautiful wallpapers, I have updated the selection with some new fresh colorful options . Makulu Makes use of variety wallpaper changer to change the wallpaper, if you prefer to manually control your wallpaper, you will need to disable Variety.
Streaming in MakuluLinux :
Netflix & Popcorm Time are Both now fully supported in This edition. Users can easily install popcorn-time straight from the software manager or synaptic manager with one click of a button, no other configuration is needed, its never been so easy to run popcorn time on linux before… Netflix is now fully integrated and functional on google chrome, it also sports some nice onscreen navigation buttons and even works in unsupported countries ! So truly streaming is something makulu users can now enjoy with ease …
Safety and Security :
MakuluLinux LxFce Edition now also sports a built in firewall to keep your system secure at all times as well as a built in Anti Virus to keep your system safe at all times. You can now use the system with feeling at ease that your safety is our priority.
32bit Architecture :
32bit Architecture is enabled by default as well as many 32bit libs installed on MakuluLinux LxFce, this allows the user to install and make use of both 64bit and 32bit deb files if he/she wishes to do so, adding far more compatibility to the system with available software out there.
PPA Support :
Additional PPA’s have been added for selected individual software on the system to make sure the users will always have the latest version available of popular software.
TLP is an advanced power management tool for Linux. It comes with a default configuration already optimized for battery life. At the same time it is highly customizable to fulfill specific user requirements.
TLP supplies separate settings profiles for AC and battery power and can enable or disable bluetooth, WiFi and WWAN radio devices upon system startup.
For ThinkPads it provides a unified way to configure charging thresholds and recalibrate the battery for all models which support it (via tp-smapi or acpi-call).
enables owners of Toshiba laptops to change the LCD brightness,
control, the internal fan and use the special keys on their keyboard
(Fn-x combinations, hot-keys). The internal functions will give the
possibility to map the Fn-Keys to functions like volume up/down, mute, suspend to disk, suspend to ram and switch LCD/CRT/TV-out. These functions heavily depend on the system and/or kernel configuration. You will need at least a kernel (v2.4.x, v2.5.x, v2.6.x) with ACPI and Toshiba support (CONFIG_ACPI and CONFIG_ACPI_TOSHIBA).
Support for Apple Devices :
handles the hotkeys found on the Apple MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, MacBook, PowerBook and iBook laptops and adjusts the LCD backlight, sound volume, keyboard backlight or ejects the CD-ROM drive accordingly. monitors the ambient light sensors to automatically light up the keyboard backlight on machines that support it.
EFI / Secure Boot :
MakuluLinux LxFce is now compatible with EFI and Secure boot computers, However, that does not mean it will work on 100% of systems. Majority of testers reported no problems with EFI, If you are one of the very unlucky few, you can still disable EFI and install this edition, it is both EFI and non EFI compatible. If you are having EFI problems, try turning secure boot off. it is however HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you leave secure boot turned off !
EFI is not supported in virtual Machines !
