GeeXboX 1.1

GeeXboX is a full Linux operating system based on MPlayer. It is a free embedded Linux distribution that aims to turn your computer into a Home Theater PC (HTPC). The whole thing can be managed using a keyboard, remote controller, or a joystick; due to its full OSD (On Screen Display) Menu.

GeeXboX also comes with a complete toolchain that allows developers to easily add extra packages and features.

At the time of the first development release (December 2002), GeeXboX was only able to play DivX movies. Today, nearly every kind of media file can be played:

• MPEG 1/2 movies (MPG files, VCDs, DVDs, etc.)
• MPEG 4 movies (DivX, XviD, H.264, etc.)
• RealMedia and Windows Media movies
• OggMedia streams
• Matroska streams
• Audio streams: MP3, Ogg/Vorbis, WAV (AudioCD), AC3, DTS, MusePack (MPC), FLAC, etc.
• Network streams: WebRadio and WebTV through SHOUTcast
• Watching analog TV and digital DVB
• Playing analog Radio streams
• Playing files from your local network (LAN) through remote NFS, Samba (i.e. Windows), or UPnP shares.

GeeXboX 1.1 has improved hardware support and dozens of new drivers (a lot of new WiFi controllers, DVB card chipsets, and new remote controls). It also comes with a massively upgraded and more stable MPlayer, featuring native decoding of various audio/video formats/codecs that used to be available only through Win32 DLLs. Also, GeeXboX now has some decoding speed improvements (use of SSSE3 instructions from Core2Duos has been added) and the OSD menu was completely rewritten to provide a lot of new attractives features. GeeXBoX now plays decrypted EVO files from HD-DVD.
