SoL (Server optimized Linux) is a Linux distribution completely independent from other Linux distributions. It was built from the original source packages and is optimized for heavy-duty server work. It contains all common server applications, XML boot, and script technology that makes SoL easy to configure.

The SoL philosophy has been that the system user (or administrator) has complete control over the system and knows exactly what to do. The SoL developers think that they should not provide a set of predefined configurations for such complex systems, and therefore provide the services "as is", like they are meant to be when provided by the creator. Hence, SoL does not provide bloated global configuration monsters that explode in flames when you do minor changes. Only very simple basic "system"configuration tasks are handled by SoL, like the starting of services and the configuration of the keyboard and network.
